Changing Mindsets

PartnerRe's mission is to be a financially stable and predictable business partner, delivering superior returns to our owner, providing rewarding opportunities for our people, and making a positive contribution to society.

To achieve our mission, we will be a top tier diversified re/insurer, with a focus on delivering underwriting margin and profit and optimizing investment returns, through strong business-partner relationships, effective risk management, an efficient operating platform and excellent talent.

This in turn requires a culture that is inclusive and open, honest and humble, collaborative and one that seeks to continuously improve and adapt to achieve maximum potential. At the same time, we operate in an environment of constant change and uncertainty, driving a need to embrace and manage ambiguity.

Our leaders set the tone for our culture, as individuals and as a collective group, through their own engagement and example. To help them role-model and continue to grow their strengths as a leader we offer the PartnerRe Leader Profile -- five mindsets that exemplify the core values of PartnerRe’s company and leadership culture, developed with the input of our own leaders.

If you have responsibility for people or aspire to lead, regardless of place in the organization, the Leader Profile can help you develop the mindsets of a PartnerRe leader.

At the core of our leadership culture are five mindsets. Mindsets are the beliefs we consciously or unconsciously form from our experiences. They lead us to behave in ways that drive our results. But our mindsets are not set in stone; they can be changed by a positive shift in our attitude and beliefs, as our knowledge and experience grow. PartnerRe’s five mindsets are:

Aligned with each mindset is a set of leadership behaviors and practices, as well as skills that can be measured and developed.

By embodying these five mindsets, our leaders not only influence how others contribute to the organization’s success, but also bring out the best in their teams, while advancing PartnerRe’s strategy.

What lies behind our results?

How to Use this Guide

This guide is intended to provide an overview of the five mindsets and the strategies and tactics we can use to integrate them into our daily lives. Use it to:

  • Become familiar with the five mindsets
  • Identify activation behaviors that can increase self-awareness
  • Build an action plan for developing new habits

Changing Mindsets: Tips and Tricks

  • Changing a habit takes work — it can take as long as two months — but with consistent effort, it can be done
  • Start small — begin with a single, daily habit, like practicing active listening during meetings. The first five days are the most important!
  • Record your progress — keep a checklist or daily journal of your habit building for personal accountability
  • Using the self-assessment at the end of this e-book as a guide, choose specific areas that you will work on for a given period of time (e.g., “I will spend the next two months improving my ability to hear criticism”)
  • Each week, write down an action you will take to address your chosen area (e.g., “I will invite a colleague to coffee and ask them for feedback on a recent action”)
  • Set aside time to reflect on your growth and any challenges you’ve encountered, and discuss them with your manager or team.
