The Mindsets

1. Leadership starts with me

Leadership behavior: Leading by example

We all recognize the concept of leading by example — especially when we perceive that others are not doing it.

If we believe “Leadership starts with me”, we will hold ourselves responsible to be the role model and example of the behavior we are looking for.

Crucial to this mindset is lining up what we say with what we do, being fully dependable, and then going a step further by committing to our strategy and culture and the processes that support it. As a leader at PartnerRe, it’s not just what we say — it’s about making the culture and values tangible and visible and about influencing others through our actions.

Self-awareness is critical to leading by example. Awareness helps us know when we need to lead, when we need to enable others to lead and when it is appropriate to make a decisive stand for a different approach or perspective.

  • Demonstrates consistency between actions and words
  • Takes decisive initiative aligned with strategy, culture and values
  • Builds self-awareness by seeking, receiving and acting on feedback
  • Enables others to focus on what creates the most impact and value for the company through constructive feedback
  • Has the courage to stand up to wrongdoing and go against the flow when needed

Self-reflection

  • Am I certain that there is alignment between what I say and what I do?
  • How do I consider PartnerRe strategy, values and culture when making decisions?
  • How well do I know my stress triggers and emotions, and how they impact those around me?
  • How well do I know the strengths and opportunities for increased impact in my team?
  • How often do I solicit feedback?
  • When have I seen the need to speak up or go against the flow? What did I do?
